What On Earth...? (1982)

Concept and creative process

Titles for a natural history quiz based on sights, sounds and objects from wildlife around the world, in which Michael Jordan invited the viewers to test their own knowledge against that of the experts. The title sequence took the form of a jigsaw puzzle of animals in motion. The animations were made by rotoscoping actual film movement of the animals, and tracing and painting them one frame at a time onto cels, before filming them on a rostrum camera under a cel overlay of the black outline of the jigsaw pattern. The transition from one animal to another was achieved by the use of animated black mattes in the jigsaw pattern to cover up the first animal. Then, having rewound the film to the start point of the transition, the reverse mattes were used to expose the next animal and so on. Ultimately, the programme logo was revealed in the same way, with the jigsaw cel overlay fading out as it was fully revealed.
