The Great British Quiz (1994)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a general knowledge quiz for teams all over the country, presented by Janice Long. A sequence was filmed on a rostrum camera of a montage of objects symbolising the various regions of the UK, such as the Welsh daffodil, the English rose, Scottish tartan, the Irish shamrock and the proverbial ‘cuppa’. It was shot through ripple glass, distorting the montage into an abstract pattern, which was combined digitally in post-production with a model shoot of a bundle of Perspex rods. As the rods turn end-on to camera, light transmitted through the rods forms a three-dimensional map of the British Isles and a background to the programme title.
