It's Only TV…but I Like It (1999)

Concept and creative process

Programme titles for a celebrity panel show about TV, hosted by Jonathan Ross, with regular team captains Jack Dee and Julian Clary. The title sequence was a multi-layered digital edit, a vortex effect of clips from opening title sequences of past decades. Zooming slowly up from the centre of the vortex throughout the montage was the circular image of the little girl Carole Hersee and her clown doll Bubbles, familiar from the BBC Test card designed by Carole’s engineer father, George Hersee. As it reached centre screen, it was briefly joined by the other elements of the test card before bursting through to a colourful modern parody of the card, with Julian Clary replacing Carole and Jack Dee replacing Bubbles. Jonathan Ross popped up from behind the blackboard element from the original design to cue the 3D programme title lettering composed of coloured TV ‘Shash’.
