Get Your Own Back (1992)

Concept and creative process

Get Your Own Back’ was a hugely popular long-running children’s programme that endured for 14 series from 1991 until 2004. The premise of the children's gameshow was to create an opportunity for a child to "get their own back" on an adult, who in their eyes had committed some crime (always trivial) for which they wanted revenge. The end result for the adult was invariably a dunk in a gunk tank. The 1992 series was the first to have a fairground theme for the set, however Dick Bailey eschewed any reference to fairs or to exuberant fairground lettering. He preferred instead to take a modern, fun, typographic approach to the title, treating each word, and in one instance the individual letters of one word, completely differently. The animation, the live action and the choreography of the colourful letterforms worked perfectly with the punchy title music track.
