Fame Academy (2002)

Concept and creative process

Titles for ‘Fame Academy’, the show of the ultimate training academy for musical stardom, presented by Patrick Kielty and Cat Deeley. BBC MediaArc broadcast design team were commissioned by BBC Music Entertainment to produce a brand identity for BBC One’s youth talent music show ‘Fame Academy’, including logo, title sequence and in-programme graphics. The design team of Sandra Nicholson (now Goddard) and Gregory Millar were supported by creative director Jane Fielder and design producer Janet Smith. The specially filmed title sequence depicted what it takes to be a success. In a snapshot of student life at the Academy, the live action fast-cutting sequence expressed the desire to be a star through singing, dancing, fun and friendship. The performers who appeared in the title sequence were professional dancers and singers. They were filmed at Witanhurst House in Highgate, North London, which was used as the actual ‘Fame Academy’ location throughout both series in 2002 and 2003. Tim Green was director of photography.
