Face The Music (1979)

Concept and creative process

The opening titles for a classical music quiz, in which the design of the titles plays with the graphic possibilities of lines of musical notation. When coloured and orchestrated as shapes on the screen in sync with the title music, they take on the function of entertaining and amusing both aurally and visually. In this sequence the designer fantasises about the lines of notation as telephone wires supported on decorative poles, with the notes like so many birds sitting on the wires. The notes were painted on cels and animated over a sky background, while  panning the artwork on a rostrum camera. A matched optical take-over to an actual sheet of music created the background for the superimposition of the programme title.
