Web Media Production is the creation and management of dynamic online media. This course meets the demand for graduates with practical skills and theoretical insight into this increasingly important industry.

The course will provide you with a thorough grounding in the working methods and processes involved in the creation of web content and services. The course examines how consumers influence web media and how to produce content that takes advantage of current trends. You will learn through tutorials, masterclasses, seminars, work experience and a mix of group and individual projects. The course has strong industry ties, giving students frequent opportunities for work on live industry web projects.

Web media professionals work as online media producers and managers in a range of industries and marketing departments. Graduates often move into web design, content management, social media and community management as well as user experience design.

Entry requirements

Students will normally be expected to possess five GCSEs (grade C or above) or equivalent (including English and Mathematics) and also to hold at least one of the following or equivalent UK or international qualification:

  • 2 A levels, grade C or above
  • 4 AS levels, grade C or above
  • 2 vocational A level, grade C or above
  • Level 3 Foundation Diploma or National Diploma
  • Advanced Diploma, grade C or above
  • International Baccalaureate, 28 points or above

What your course will look like

Assessment

You will be assessed through a mixture of project work, group work, individual creative activities, essays, engagement with the web, and placements with local industries.

Year 1

You will gain a fundamental knowledge of the industry, social media culture, web design as well as the production and presentation of content online. You will begin to think about your own approach to web services and build confidence and self-discipline in responding to live and self-initiated briefs. We encourage you to start thinking about your contextual studies research.

Year 2

You will gain greater understanding of how to build dynamic websites, design user-focussed experiences, as well as creating online games and stories. We set briefs that encourage you to collaborate with other students and create e-commerce services as part of a production team.

Year 3

You will further develop your skills in advanced web technologies and digital advertising, bringing your learning together in a major web project, ready for exhibition at the degree show. We ask you to show your contextual studies research and thinking in a long-form dissertation.

Progression

Successful completion of this course can lead to postgraduate study in MA/MSc Broadcast Futures, MA/MSc Interactive Digital Media, and MA/MSc Interactive Product Futures.
