Smartphone Photography

for Buildings and Urban Landscapes

Harness the power of your smartphone, get inspired by architecture and create amazing photos. On this fun and practical course you will be taken step-by-step through the process of creating, editing and distributing great shots of the urban landscape.  This includes learning the basics of taking a good photo through to using editing apps available at your fingertips, as well as how to share your photos by developing social media strategies.

Based in and around Ravensbourne's award-winning building, as well as around key central London locations, you will get the chance to combine your passion for architecture and design with new skills to creatively capture London's iconic skylines. 

Topics covered

  • Basic concepts of photography
  • Types of photography (eg. interior architecture, landscape, urban)
  • Editing photography using smartphone apps
  • Sharing your photos on social media platforms to share, including strategies to take and learning about different features
  • Creating an architectural point of view through photography 

Learning outcomes

On completion of this course, you will  be able to generate high quality and inspirational photographs of architectural and urban landscapes. You'll also have learned the skills to maximise opportunities to share your photos online via social media channels.

About the tutor: Alberto Villanueva

Alberto Villanueva is a Spanish architect. He holds a Master of Architecture from the European University of Madrid and a MA in Environment Design at Ravensbourne with a distinction, where he has developed a project researching the possibilities of 3D printers and new materials in the colonization of planet Mars, as a solution to generate architectures in extreme environments. Project noted by The Royal Academy of Arts and featured in publications like Dezeen, designboom, Archdaily, The Spaces or DesignCurial.

Currently he is sessional lecturer for the postgraduate courses. Alberto also teach for the Contextual Studies unit (Theory and Context and Dissertation Preparation), coordinates the Postgraduate Mentoring Programme and is lecturer for the Greenwich Digital Skills.

Alberto is the Head of IDEA architecture office,  a multi-disciplinary firm based in London that creates and innovates in architecture and design. IDEA's projects have a strong connection to the natural environment, new technologies and anticipate the demands of society. Enduring, classical design principles permeate the work, yet mingle with new trends in design and architecture.

Alberto's academic projects cover a wide range of scope in scale and have significantly diverse projectual approaches. His academic work and research included sites like Spain, South Korea, China, Slovenia, Italy, France, EAU, United States or even the planet Mars.
