Contemporary embroidery, embellishment and surface design

Embroidery with a twist! Experience a darker and alternative side of embroidered embellishment and surface design on silk on this practical and intriguing course.

Throughout this practical course you'll be inspired by, and learn from, award-winning textile designer Steph Aman on how you can pushes the boundaries of embroidered embellishment. You will be introduced to a broad range of techniques used in contemporary fashion, to produce your own exquisite creations.

Topics covered

  • Applique shadow work
  • Cut work couching
  • Princess pleating
  • Quilting sequining
  • Floss and yarn stitching
  • Fabric manipulation- with shearing elastic, folds, pleats & gathers
  • Printing in conjunction with embroidery

Learning outcomes

On completion of this course you will have produced a creative sample book of different techniques. Development of personal project or product creation working with creative embellishment techniques.

What you need to bring

Pen & paper/sketch pad, embroidery hoops, spray starch, lightweight silky fabrics ideal, small embroidery scissors, selection of coloured threads

About your tutor: Steph Aman

Award-winning textile designer and with an MA in fashion from the Royal College of Art, Steph Aman pushes the boundaries via her distinctive design technique which has won her world-wide acclaim including a host of accolades from international fashion houses such as Armani, Vera Wang and Calvin Klein.

Working some serious magic with her beloved Irish embroidery machine - which is over a century old, Aman and her team create hand-finished, exceptionally delicate, signature products using a needle and thread, industry experts have likened her practice to free hand-drawing onto silk.

Current Steph Aman collections, are known for their distinctive soft lingerie ranges from bias-cut slip dresses & kimono’s, all in a Classic Embroidery technique to her brand exclusive ‘Darker’ embroideries in a more functional & commercial Silk collection. The collections are produced and exhibited seasonally in Paris and London.
