An introduction to Photoshop & Illustrator for fashion

Take your fashion designs from the page to the screen, with this hands-on introduction to Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. This practical course is ideal if you need to translate your designs or fashion illustration into a digital format. You will learn a wide range of core skills across these two industry-essential programs. Starting at the very beginning, you will be guided through the two programs with step-by-step expert advice, allowing you to get to grips with some of their key uses within the realm of fashion design and realise your own creative ideas.

As this is a beginners-level course, no experience of these programs is required, however you will need to have some experience of producing hand sketches and fashion illustrations.

  • Manipulating and editing images in Photoshop
  • Creative moodboards and layouts in Photoshop
  • Fashion Illustrations, drawing, painting and colouring in Photoshop
  • How to draw in Illustrator – a step-by-step method to drawing detailed Technical Drawings and design components
  • Create your own fully coloured technical drawings using Illustrator

Learning outcomes

You will have gained a thorough grounding in how to use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator and their key uses within the fashion industry. You will have learned and experienced practical skills including drawing and colouring, as well as manipulating images and laying them out professionally. Additionally, you will have started to create your own body of work using the skills gained throughout this course.

What you need to bring

Notebook and pen for taking notes, USB stick/hard drive for saving work created, hand-sketches of flats or fashion illustrations for scanning and working on in class. These requirements will be discussed during the first class, so no need to prepare in advance

About your tutor: Leonie Li

Since graduating 12 years ago from the University of Creative Arts in Epsom, Leonie has been working consistently across various roles within the fashion industry. She is an experienced CAD designer who specialises in childrenswear, with extensive knowledge of both Photoshop and Illustrator and their applications within the realms of design. Her recent roles include Design Manager at Marie-Chantal, a luxury childrenswear company, where she managed the small design team as well as designing the girlswear collections across multi-product. She is currently working with WGSN, creating CAD-based forecast collections and trend analysis reports for the Kidswear department.
