Adult short courses

Greenwich Digital Skills (GDS) offer an exciting variety of part time, evening and weekend digital short courses for 19+ learners.

Greenwich residents also enjoy reduced rates on our courses and further reduced rates are available for those in receipt of means tested benefits.

Here's some of the exciting courses we have on offer this term.

9 November: Introduction to Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator

9 November - 30 November / 10am - 4.30pm

This course will run for 3 Saturdays:

  • 9 November
  • 23 November
  • 30 November

Important note: there is no course on 16 November

On this course you will gain a basic working understanding of the Adobe design software, Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop.

 

The 3 programs will be taught along side each other, maximising on the crossover between the individual software.

 

Learners will be guided through the basics of each programme, quickly gaining a broad base of skills.

 

The below topics will be covered across three software packages:

  • Working with layers
  • Selections
  • Image adjustments
  • Layer styles
  • Working with vectors
  • Shapes
  • Type
  • Single page documents
  • Placing images
  • Text and Layout

All learners will have access to their own laptop or computer and the course is taught at an approachable pace, however you must be comfortable and able to use a computer (i.e know how to use an internet browser, copy and paste etc)

 

Please bring a USB stick  to save your files and documents onto and to keep any shared resources.

 

On completion of the course learners will:

  • Have a better understanding of the adobe software and feel more confident with approaching the programmes and building up further knowledge

  • Be able to create and manipulate image in Photoshop

  • Be able to create shapes and type in Illustrator

  • Be able create and layout text in InDesign

  • Have an understanding of how to synthesise the three programs for basic graphic design and home publishing needs

  • Create and save documents suitable for print and web.

Basic IT skills (for example being able to use the web browser/internet as well  required to commence the course)

20 November: SEO boost and social media for business

20-28 November / 6-9pm

Is it difficult to attract readers to your website/blog with increased competition from business trying to get to the top of Google or other search engines?

 

Do you struggle to understand who your readers are? Want to implement your first SEO campaign? Do you wonder how SEO might help you? Need some guidance on effective Social Media use? If that is the case, then this the right course for you.

 

This course will help to accelerate the inbound traffic from search engines to your website, improve your presence on the web and offer tips to help your Google ranking, while also looking at how to maximise the social media impact.

 

Complete beginners welcome - no experience needed, this course is not as technical and complex as it sounds. Our courses are taught in a relaxed and friendly manner by an industry practising tutor.

7 December: Intermediate Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign

This 10-hour course helps build on knowledge from the Introduction to Adobe design software and introduces intermediate level skills and tasks in Illustrator, Indesign and Photoshop.

18 January: Do it yourself (DIY) Typography

18 January 2020 /  10am - 3.30pm

Typography is a fundamental part of graphic design, but approaching typography in a DIY, low-fi and handmade way can seem intimidating at first. Handmade and hand lettered typography has seen a strong resurgence in the past few years, offering personality, charm and depth to work.

This workshop helps explore different ideas and treatments to letter forms with a variety of exercises (including hand lettering) which will help learners in idea generation, development and refinement in crafting a hand lettered word. You'll also get the chance to create a DIY modular typeface, a series of individual square to build your own letter forms.

This workshop is ideal as an introduction to hand lettering and type in order to get a better idea of how this could be used in design work. 

Equally, intermediate level learners could attend and utilise this workshop to develop their lettering style and exercises to further their design practice.

Brief lesson overview

  • Introduction to course, admin etc.
  • Introduction to type, what is typography, hand-lettering, how to do your own?
  • Hand lettering exercises: getting comfortable with drawing

25 January: Smartphone photography

25 January - 8 February / 10am-1pm


Learn to take pictures and the best strategies to edit them. Get started on this three-day course and we will show you how to transform your photos with a good composition and positioning of your subject, use lead-in lines and framing. You will learn how to use light to create beautiful images, how to crop them into even better compositions and use your app to improve brightness, colour and contrast, how to apply artistic filters and create amazing collages. 

 

You will finish the course maximising the possibilities of your smartphone, transforming your device into an effective tool to take pictures with a high-quality and understanding how to edit them in order to highlight the results.

1 February: Introduction to mobile app design

1-8 February 2020 / 10am- 4pm

Do you have a mobile app idea?

 

Do you have an existing brand and would like to reach more customers by adding more value to your business through a mobile app? 

 

In this workshop you will learn the industry and practice of mobile apps. You will also prototype your own mobile app using professional industry standard Prototyping tools. 

This workshop is for:

  • Those who would like to build a mobile app but do not know where to start or find a Developer to ask the right questions.

  • Those who would like to learn more about mobile apps and incorporate it into their business model.

  • Those who do not have the budget to pay a developer to build their mobile app. 

  • Those who do not have the time to learn code to build a mobile app.

  • Those who are non-coders with absolutely no coding skills.

10 February: Build your own website for business

10-18 February / 6 - 9pm

Whether you are completely new to working with the web or have some experience and would like to brush up and extend your knowledge, this course will be perfect for you.

 

Learn how to create a professional-looking website where you can sell your products and services. With a visual page builder and eCommerce tools built right in, you’ll be able to create an online presence that works for your business. We will use Shopify and we shall also look at other free or cost effective online tools to help you run your business more effectively.

 

Once you have completed the course you will be able to:

 

  • Create a web page and a website using a visual page builder
  • Learn how to add images to your website. - Find out where you can get free images that you can use on your website
  • Know how to add products and services to your website for selling
  • Know which payment provider(s) to use to accept payments
  • Know which tools to use to collect card payment at events/markets/face-to-face
  • Use other online tools and services that can benefit your business

20 April: Introduction to film making

20 April - 8 June / 1 - 6pm

Each five hour session (6 Mondays in total, no teaching on bank holidays) will introduce you to the theory and practice of film making.

 

You will study:

 

  • How to tell a short story: beginning, middle and end
  • Framing the narrative: how to compose the shot
  • Meet the production kit: camera, lights, action
  • Pre-production planning: scripts, casting and locations
  • Produce a short film - In-camera without editing. 

You will be provided with all the film making equipment needed: camera, microphones, lights. 

 

Laptop computers will also be available for each student to use during the sessions.

 

You will work individually and in small production groups using hands on production techniques as well as cloud based digital learning.

 

Learn the basics of film making before moving onto the next level - Intermediate film making and post production.

 

This opportunity can be used to enhance your skills in development and preparation towards subsequent education and/or employment, if you are starting your own business or already run your own business, or alternatively as an enjoyable way to engage with new people and new ideas in the fantastic setting of the new Ravensbourne building.

 

Past learners have gained employment at the BBC, gone onto our access to higher education course and undergraduate courses at Ravensbourne.

 

Basic IT skills are required to commence the course, however no experience of film equipment are required.
