A Chartered Engineer, Bob started his career as an indentured apprentice ‘learning the art and trade of printing machinery manufacture’. He obtained his first degree in Mechanical Sciences by part-time study from the Open University whilst working as a Manufacturing Engineer. He subsequently obtained a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.), Mathematics (with Physics)from Manchester University before becoming a College lecturer; during this period he obtained his MSc in Advanced Manufacturing Systems from Brunel University by part-time study.
His connection with Ravensbourne began in 1998 teaching mathematics to broadcast engineerng students. Bob is focussed upon mathematics education and much of this work has been concerned with students making the transition to university-level study and the support required to help them succeed.
Bobs research interests are in the modelling of manufacturing processes, with specific emphasis on metal cutting in machining-based environments.
