Ravensbourne students broadcast ‘The Taming of The Shrew’ to schools across the UK

Ravensbourne’s BA (Hons) Digital Television Production and BSc (Hons) Digital Television Technology students recently collaborated with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) to broadcast a production of ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ to 20,000 students across the UK.

The project was conducted as part of the RSC’s Schools’ Broadcast programme, which was created to give students unable to attend one of the RSC’s live productions in Stratford-upon-Avon the opportunity to experience Shakespeare first-hand. The latest broadcast went to over 250 schools, featuring a British Sign Language interpreter for those with hearing impairments.

Following the production Ravensbourne hosted a live Q&A session with director Justin Audibert and cast members Claire Price and Joe Arkley, giving students around the country the opportunity to learn more about Shakespeare’s work and legacy.

Commenting, Niamh Duffy, a second year BA (Hons) Digital Television Production student said, “Producing for the RSC has been completely different from all the other projects I have worked on and provided a new and practical approach to my learning. I now feel a lot more confident working alongside clients — consistently thinking of the future of the show and creating an amazing end product. I am so proud of the whole crew and look forward to future projects.”

Fiona Ingram, Head of Education Programmes at the Royal Shakespeare Company added, "In November we streamed our fifteenth Schools' Broadcast to thousands of students across the UK. Led by Ravensbourne students the broadcast continues to develop and evolve through their commitment to the project and drive to achieve the best standards. Ravensbourne has enabled children everywhere, regardless of where they live or what their background is, to engage with and enjoy Shakespeare."
