Ravensbourne goes to Hollywood

Sara Girelli and Thomas Alberti took to the skies last week, travelling to LA to represent Ravensbourne at Campus Moviefest.

The two students are currently studying Ravensbourne’s Access to Higher Education Diploma, aimed at adult learners returning to education with a view to studying an honours degree.  Both Thomas and Sara received nominations in the festival’s Elfenworks Social Justice Category.

The contest called for participants to submit short films that tackle poverty, inequality or other social injustices affecting their community.

We are very pleased to report that both Thomas and Sara received honourable mentions, a fantastic achievement, especially in light of some very tough competition.

Sara’s film, ‘A living wage, a better life’ provides a unique insight into life below the UK poverty line. A very timely subject given the recent debates in Parliament about the living wage against the minimum wage.

Thomas’s film ‘Call me again’ tackles homophobia. When asked about his subject matter he said; “Even nowadays, some families still don't accept the homosexuality of their children just because someone or something says that it’s wrong. I want to tell people don't lose hope, because there is nothing wrong in them.“

We spoke with the talented pair to find out how the experience went.

"I still can't believe it but today I am in Hollywood with an Honorable Mention for my short video. Los Angeles is just an amazing place, full of freedom and sunshine, full of great opportunities for your career and yourself. I've seen my video on the big screen of a festival in Hollywood and my heart stopped beating for a while. I'm so proud of my achievements and I hope this is only the beginning of a great adventure. This is what I want to do in my life and even if someone told me I'm a child because I'm still dreaming, that’s okay because I realised that sometimes, dreams come true." Thomas Alberti

“This experience has proven to me that if you don't dare, you don't get results. I'd like to thank Ravensbourne for their great support, I wish to turn this journey into a project to make everyone understand that you always have to try.” Sara Girelli

Congratulations to all involved with this fantastic achievement. Find out more about Ravensbourne’s Access to Higher Education course.
