Londons night-time cyclists

Associate Senior Lecturer published in Der Spiegel

Ravensbourne Associate Senior Lecturer in Digital Photography, Julian Hawkins, has recently had a feature article published in Der Spiegel, a German weekly news magazine particularly recognised for its investigative journalism.

London -Brighton

The article documents an ongoing project about London’s night-time cyclists, a quiet phenomenon where a group of cyclists set off on a night ride to different points along the coast.

The journeys always begin at midnight on Hyde Park Corner. Cyclists set off, with only one break along the way, to either the Sussex, Essex or Kent coasts. At the end of the ride participants have breakfast at a café that has opened especially for them. They then ride back into town or take the train.

This journalism project was originally initiated in partnership with Simpson Magazine, the brainchild of a Ravensbourne sessional lecturer, Terry Hawes. When working on the feature for Der Spiegel, Julian not only shot stills images but also collaborated with Ravensbourne third-year student Peter Marshall, who made a short photo film.
