McBusted: TourPlay is a concert film mixed with documentary footage. It follows the joining together of Busted and McFly and follows their success as McBusted, from their sold out arena tour right up to their sold out headline show at Hyde Park in front of 50,000 people.

“I grew up watching films at my local Vue cinema in Gun Wharf, Portsmouth, and now I have a film playing there. It’s insane”, says David, “I've done a lot of work in the music industry over the years since leaving Ravensbourne, starting with shooting behind the scenes videos, then moved on to low budget concert films, tour docs, music videos and now somehow I've just directed a film that’s going to cinema.”

Now that TourPlay is coming out, David is hoping to move forward with directing a lot more concert films and documentaries off the back of it. “I love music and I love film,” he says, “so working on these kinds of projects is a dream come true for me. I want to try and think of new ways to approach these kinds of projects and try and create new and unique experiences for the viewers.” At the same time David is also trying to push forward with some TV projects, and has been shooting comedy sketches with his friends every month for the last year. He and his friends plan to write a pilot next and get that commissioned for TV.

David, who graduated in 2008 with a BA (Hons) in Content Creation and Broadcasting, recalls that Ravensbourne was a fantastic part of his life which he really loved. “There was a great resource of equipment, and that’s what really helped me when I was there. I used to constantly hire kit out and make my own projects with friends of mine that were in bands. Also, I made some great contacts.” He recognises that just staying in touch with people in his class helped him get work in the industry later. “It’s important to network with everyone and stay in touch because you never know who is going to be able to help you out later.”

“Ravensbourne always had a great reputation and great facilities. That was the reason I went there. If I was going to attend university, I wanted to go to the best.”

While at Ravensbourne David studied content creation. “I'm not sure I ever had the same idea of content creation as it was designed on the course,” he says. “I don't think a lot of directors come out of that course. But to me... content creation is everything. It's the sole starting point of any project. Everyone has different reasons for wanting to make something. Content creation just summarises that initial spark I guess. That moment when for whatever reason, somebody will say: 'Let’s make something...'”

Since leaving Ravensbourne David has travelled all over the world including to Brazil, Japan, America and all over Europe, making tour films. He’s directed concert films, music videos and tour documentaries for all kinds of artists and, he says, “he’s loved every minute of it”. He’s also done a lot of work with WWF, which includes directing live streams for their annual Earth Hour Events as well as getting the chance to travel to Africa and shoot a documentary about Mountain Gorillas. “That,” he says “was one of the best things I have ever done in my life.”

McBusted: TourPlay is screened from 28 October exclusively at Vue cinemas across the country.
