CODEZONERS closes digital skills gap

Demand for digital skills in UK businesses continues to outstrip supply, and many companies are forced to look outside the UK to plug holes in their digital workforce or constrain their pace of growth.

Ravensbourne and @newmedia2.0. are closing this gap with the launch in June 2014 of Phase 2 of the successful digital skills initiative {CODEZONERS. This 9 month programme began in February 2014 and has already proved so successful that Phase 2 is being brought forward to meet industry demand.

{CODEZONERS} provides a unique opportunity for young people with an interest in coding and design but not currently in education, employment or training. Students experience a taught computer programming course at Ravensbourne’s state-of-the-art London campus for 2 days per week, and then have the opportunity to apply their new skills in real time, working on live projects with a {CODEZONER} Industry Partner for 3 days each week.

In exchange for providing this opportunity to {CODEZONERS}, industry partners gain a risk-free opportunity to work with students keen to develop their skills in cutting edge technologies and very keen to impress. Many Industry Partners from Phase 1 also found they have gained from the students’ fresh perspective to computer programming.

Trevor Fenwick, Executive Chairman at Euromonitor International commented “Partnering with Ravensbourne on the {CODEZONERS} programme was an excellent way for Euromonitor to grow talent for the future, as well as helping a young person start their career. Through the {CODEZONERS} recruitment process we knew we were getting a young person who wanted to learn and gain as much experience as possible. With the right support internally they’ve very quickly become an asset to the company.”

Kay, a student from the first cohort of {CODEZONERS} said “Coding is the new language everyone should learn and becoming a {CODEZONER} is the right way to start”, while Amin, also from Cohort 1 commented “If you're a determined person with a strong interest in coding or the web, it will feel like a scuba dive into dreams and opportunities.”

{CODEZONERS} are recruited through Ravensbourne's outreach programme; Industry Partners through Ravensbourne’s partnership with @newmedia2.0.

Cohort 1 Testimonials

“I have never done any programming before and have very limited knowledge about coding. But when I joined {Codezoners} I was surprised to find that it’s not as difficult as it looks. I never knew that coding can be easy to learn! I joined because I would like to be part of the future success in the creativity and innovations of internet technology. Coding is the new language everyone should learn and becoming a {Codezoner} is the right way to start.”

Kay, Cohort 1 {CODEZONER}

“I happened to come across {Codezoners} when I was wishing for two things: A chance to put knowledge to use very quickly, and the opportunity to find out what I'm good at. All I knew to start with was that I wanted to be an excellent coder and a valuable team player. At {Codezoners}, we are studying but being able to build working products at our work placement makes it more empowering. The course is full of discovery if you know how to ask questions and stay to listen. If you're a hands-on kind of person and you're not afraid of thinking, you would find the course engaging. If you're a determined person with a strong interest in coding or the web, it will feel like a scuba dive into dreams and opportunities. You have to be ready to embrace the work ethic and grow your perspective, to find your place in the bigger picture and the industry at large. Thereafter, you can make every day of study and work a boost in the right direction for you.”

Amin, Cohort 1 {CODEZONER}
