Pre-sessional English Language Requirements

English language requirements

Study the English language at Ravensbourne to improve your English ahead of your main course of study.

You'll develop the English skills you need to understand a course of study at Ravensbourne, improve your language skills to meet the demands of your course, increase your proficiency with creative terminology and meet other Ravensbourne students from around the world before the start of term. 

If you are an international student it is recommended that you take the pre-sessional English course if you want to:

  1. Improve your English language skills across reading, writing, listening and speaking ahead of starting your main course of study at Ravensbourne
  2. Increase your proficiency with the creative language and terminology you will need for your course 
  3. Gain an insight into the British academic environment
  4. Meet other Ravensbourne students from around the world to make friends and network before the start of term

Postgraduate 6 week programme

29 July to 6 September 2019

  • B2 Level - Payment for the pre-sessional program must be made in full along with the non-refundable CAS deposit of £5,000 directly to Ravensbourne no later than four weeks before the course start date.
  • B1 Level -  Applicants who require two separate CASs must pay the full pre-sessional fee before we issue their pre-sessional only CAS. Once they have met the requirements (including English language requirements) for the second CAS they will be required to pay a CAS deposit of £5,000 or  their full course fee before the second CAS is issued.   

Please note
Applicants who require a Tier 4 visa should apply at least four weeks before the Pre-Sessional English Language Course start date to allow for visa application processing.

Applicants who require two separate CASs must provide financial documents/ bank statements each time they request a CAS.

Pre-sessional course eligibility

The below applicants would be eligible to take the pre-sessional course:

  • Undergraduate and postgraduate offer holders who are proficient at CEFR Level B2 equivalent to at least 5.5 in each of the four sub-components of language learning: reading, speaking, writing and listening (unless otherwise exempt by Ravensbourne). Applicants may submit a standard Academic IELTS or Trinity test certificate, or other qualification equivalent to CEFR B2 (please see here for information on acceptable English language qualifications) to demonstrate their English language ability.
  • Undergraduate offer holders who are proficient at CEFR level B1 equivalent to at least IELTS 5.0 in each of the four sub-components of language learning: reading, speaking, writing and listening. Applicants at this level must submit an IELTS SELT 'IELTS Academic for UKVI' test certificate/Trinity SELT in order to demonstrate their English language ability.
  • Applicants’ with CEFR B1 English language ability in 1 or more of the four sub-components of language learning are to be assigned a separate CAS to enable them to attend the English language pre-sessional course. If at the end of the pre-sessional course the student successfully achieves English Language CEFR level B2 equivalent to a minimum of IELTS 5.5 in each component or provide us with an IELTS or equivalent English language qualification demonstrating CEFR B2 level (minimum of 5.5) in each component we shall assign a second CAS, providing you continue to meet all Tier 4 and other eligibility requirements, for your main academic course of study which would enable you to make a Tier 4 visa extension application from inside the UK.
  • Offer holders who meet our English language requirements, but feel they would benefit from additional English language instruction, prior to their degree at Ravensbourne University London. 

English language support

English language support will automatically be available to those who have completed the pre-sessional courses and are in need of ongoing support once enrolled on their full time course of study at Ravensbourne. 

All English as a second language speakers who enrol on a full-time course at Ravensbourne will also be able to benefit from ongoing English language support alongside their main subject of study at Ravensbourne.

How to apply

In order to apply for the pre-sessional course you should already hold an offer to study on a Bachelor Degree or Master Degree course at Ravensbourne.
