This course offers a solid UX foundation and hands-on experience through a series of practical weekly assignments in two projects based on real-world scenarios. Learn research, rapid ideation, prototyping and testing, both on paper and with digital tools, and you will learn how to apply skills working solo and collaborating in remote teams.
This part-time course is held online over 12 weeks. It consists of classes, practical work and live evening sessions and can be attended while working a full-time job.
If you're a young professional with one to five years of experience in design or related fields such as marketing, product management or entrepreneurship - this course is for you.
If you're either self-taught and wish to discover tools and techniques, or are just starting out in UX and want to land your first job or internship as a UX designer - this course is for you.
Note: To complete the course – and all course assignments – you must work in Miro and Figma. These tools are free and/or offer free trials. But to avoid limitations, you might want to plan for a license cost between 15 USD and 30 USD, depending on the subscription plan you choose. This is not included in the course fee. Note that you do not need to activate an account before the course starts. Your teacher will guide you through your options at the beginning of the course.
Week 1: The UX process, principles and framework
Being a UX designer – getting into the mindset and learning the stages of a UX project. Human-centered design and UX applied to problem-solving.
Week 2: User research and field studies
How to keep a UX-project journal. Performing field studies and using direct observation to uncover insights and user needs. Individual project starts. Build your confidence and learn to innovate using research and rapid prototyping as an individual.
Week 3: Analog Ideation & Prototyping Techniques
Turning insights into ideas. Creative ideation methods for generating many ideas. Using rapid paper prototyping methods to make ideas tangible.
Week 4: Testing and refinement
How to prepare for and conduct prototype testing. Formulating hypotheses and how to evaluate test results. Achieving success through iteration.
Week 5: Project presentation and feedback
Presentations and review of the individual projects. Feedback and project refinement for your portfolio.
Week 6: Tools for remote collaboration and prototyping
Elevating your designs using modern tools of the trade. Introduction on how to use Figma for building and testing prototypes. Collaborative project starts. Get hands-on experience as part of a team, working together in a group with remote tools and applying the knowledge gained in the individual project.
Week 7: Product Discovery
Quantitative and qualitative research methods and tools. Desk research, benchmarking and ethnography.
Week 8: Definition and Insights
Abstracting the challenge. Creating space for solutions. Affinity mapping. Personas and behaviour archetypes. Journey maps, selecting and prioritizing ideas.
Week 9: Prototype ideation and design
Collaborative ideation. Turning sketches into prototypes using Figma. Laying the groundwork for usability testing with research objectives.
Week 10: Remote prototype testing
Planning and performing moderated remote user tests. Presenting your findings and creating test reports.
Week 11: Project Presentation and feedback
Review of final projects. Critique. Refinement of work for your portfolio.
Week 12: Career management advice
Types of experience designers, picking a track or focus area. Interview tricks. Creating winning portfolios and improving your skills. Plus, a course recap.
