I chose to study BA (Hons) Graphic Design at Ravensbourne for the innovative and forward-thinking approach the course takes. The focus on digital and print design provided me with the confidence that I could transfer my skills within the creative industries. Collaborating with students from other courses had huge benefits, as it helped me appreciate design in different disciplines and through varying perspectives.
I have always had a huge passion for design as it gives me the freedom to inform, change, motivate and inspire through artistic expression. I enjoy thinking of creative solutions to benefit others through art and design. My studies sharpened my creative skills and equipped me with practical expertise on how to manage my workflow and effectively pitch ideas and projects. The ‘Lates’ series, industry days and workshops helped me build contacts and expose my portfolio to a wider audience.
The Degree Show was one of my highlights at Ravensbourne as I got to see how my work impacted people from different walks of life. The feedback I gained from designers and lead creatives in the industry was humbling and it reassured me that I have a space in the creative field. Off the back of the Degree Show I secured a job as a digital designer at Blippar — a leading technology company specialising in augmented-reality and computer vision. I worked for Blippar as a digital designer for almost three years after graduating. Blippar’s ambition is to enhance everyday life with augmented-reality and give you more from the world you see. My time at Blippar gave me experience in commercial work and marketing and a wide knowledge of interactive and experiential design, encompassing augmented and virtual-reality.
The skills I developed at Ravensbourne allowed me to work with global brands such as Burberry, Pepsi and Kellogg’s amongst others. Currently I work for Zego, a forward-thinking insurance technology company that wants to transcend boundaries in the insurance industry. The Zego app helps Uber, Deliveroo and other delivery drivers have a more flexible insurance around their working hours. My role as a designer is to help amplify Zego’s message and tone of voice through their marketing material, website and mobile app.
I would advise prospective students to be confident in your work and back your ideas! Make sure you take advantage of every encounter you have, as networking can open the door to a long and prosperous career. Whether it’s another student or an industry contact, gaining knowledge and taking it with you on your journey will help in the long run. In other words, listen attentively, ask questions inquisitively and stay inspired!
