"I remember the first day I went to Ravensbourne; it felt a very open place. Everything was possible and that felt like an extremely inspiring and exciting journey to begin."
Year of graduation: 2005
Highlights from my time at Ravensbourne:
- Womenswear Finalist in Reiss
- Womenswear Finalist in Graduate Fashion Week Gold Award
- Interned for Luella Bartley and got offered a junior position whilst in my third year.
- Offered my first job from GFW for design assistant to John Richmond and lived and worked in Italy for 3 years after graduating
The womenswear fashion degree was supported by a strong team of tutors and great opportunities for work experience. This was was really attractive to me as it really focussed on industry relevant experience, which I think is massively important to all degree courses. As a student you absolutely need that context to your learning.
My work has changed in the sense that my degree gave full freedom to explore my creative direction and design handwriting without limitation. I think that was really important preparation for me in terms of being the Creative Director of my own label.
My advice to prospective students would be to get as much work experience as you can whilst studying. The ability to be able to manage an internship whilst also fulfilling your own creative studies will stand you in excellent stead when you graduate and put you in front of a highly competitive graduate market.
I am now the Creative Director of own label ‘Teatum Jones’ – a designer womenswear brand showing at London Fashion Week.
