Ravensbourne

Steven Lidbury

"How would I describe Ravensbourne? Fun, memorable, emotional, educational, intense, progressive, crazy, tiring, challenging, outrageous, wild, defining, rewarding”

Course Studied: BA (Hons) Interior Design

Year of Graduation:  1998

How has your degree from Ravensbourne helped you achieve your professional goals?

Through the entire degree process but particularly in the last year, Ravensbourne truly found in me the drive and belief within to set a new path and ambitious agenda to be a prominent influence on the conversation and world of design.

What were the benefits that you experienced from studying with us?

Ravensbourne opened my eyes as to what was possible and gave me the confidence and belief in my own ability. After completing my Interior Design degree, my Masters degree took me from Birmingham UCE to the Benetton sponsored Fabrica Research & Design Centre in Treviso, Italy, where I completed a two-year work scholarship under the stimulating direction of the legendary Oliviero Toscani.

What were the main highlights from your time at Ravensbourne?

Meeting fellow design students and friends, many of whom still are to this very day (21 years later), friends, work colleagues and business partners. They are the important highlight to take away, as it's the human relationships that matter most. After all, everything you design for is for other people to use, experience and enjoy.

Are you in employment and, if so as what?

I currently work at Eight Inc. as Principal in the London office, leading a team of strategic designers and business creatives to deliver holistic, human-centric experiences for world-renowned brands. Sometimes called “Apple’s best kept secret” Eight Inc. is one of the most progressive design firms working today. helping to transform organisations to be relevant in the world’s most highly competitive environments by looking at the design factors that drive successful human interactions.

What advice would you give to prospective students?

Be unique, push the boundaries, always think transformationally and interrogate yourself and your work every step of the way.
