“Your time at university is precious, relish every moment, and use it to push as many creative boundaries as possible!”
Course Studied: BA (Hons) Digital Television Production
Year of Graduation: 2017
Ravensbourne came highly recommended to me by someone who had worked at the BBC for over 40 years. I initially joined on the one-year Media Production foundation course, to help brush up my skills and knowledge in this field. However, I quickly realised what a special place Ravensbourne is and was instantly hooked! I ended up staying on for a further three years on the Digital Television Production course. I remember walking in for the first time and having that 'wow' factor moment. I was also impressed at how high the employability rate was, as having a job in my chosen industry was obviously very important to me.
From the collaborative working environment to the quality of the equipment in the central loan resources (CLR), it was all fantastic. However, the biggest benefit for me was seeing how much Ravensbourne mirrored the industry itself. It taught me how production processes worked and crucially, how to 'network'.
I am currently working as a production runner for The X Factor UK and the first person I met at work went to Ravensbourne! That connection instantly helped me to stand out amongst the crowd. Ravensbourne is a hugely renowned and respected name within the creative industry.
One of the biggest things I realised when I began working in the industry, was how incredible the facilities and equipment we had access to were. The equipment that was being used on one of ITV's biggest shows was what we could book and use ourselves from the CLR.
I was lucky enough to take on some exciting roles during my time at Ravensbourne. These included heading up the team as Degree Show Producer for our end of year graduate show in 2016. I got to charter a helicopter and work with the voice of The X Factor, Mr Peter Dickson....very cool!! I also gained experience with the likes of BBC Radio 2, This Morning and more recently, The X Factor through alumni links, which in turn, helped me to secure my first full-time job in the industry.
Ravensbourne is completely unique and totally different to any other institution I have ever visited. Its small size helps to give it a friendly and encouraging atmosphere, where everyone knows your name. The industry focus was also a huge benefit. By year two of my course, I was working as a Broadcast Producer with The Royal Shakespeare Company, helping to broadcast their content to thousands of students around the world.
The biggest highlight for me though however, was meeting and working with like minded and creative people. I made friends for life at Ravensbourne and laughed on a daily basis. They are all now succeeding in their respective industries, and I can't wait for our paths to cross once again, but this time within a real life working environment!
