Course: BA (Hons) Interior Design Environment Architectures / MA Environmental Design
Year of Graduation: BA 2006/ MA 2010
Ravensbourne was integral to my development as a holistic designer and then to my connection into the design industry. I really liked the fact that there were a range of tutors with fantastic links to the design industry who were receptive to working with students from varied backgrounds.
My tutors were passionate about providing us with the best chances for success. On both my BA and MA courses I was able to explore subjects for my major projects which were unique to me and not 'mainstream'. I was fully supported, enabling me to fully utilise my time to learn and develop and to reach my full potential. The content of my MA was well received in part because I was given the space to connect two schools of thought in a unique way. I was honoured to be awarded the student of the year award which was definitely a highlight and something which I am very proud of.
My degree was conducive to gaining many employment opportunities, both within London but also internationally, and this helped myself and others find work in companies that reflected our design wants. Exposure to working with key design firms in London was an essential part of my development whilst studying, and this work experience led to part-time employment. With the industry being such a competitive market, it was very important to have those opportunities available to us from the beginning.
I work as a senior designer at Gensler in the Tokyo office and I’ve been with the firm for over 10 years now. I mainly focus on commercial interior projects while also being involved in education, retail and large scale architecture designs.
Take the opportunity to follow the ideas that you are passionate about; don't settle for someone else's ideas, your own are unique. Work with your tutors to see how your ideas can be improved and perfected. Our tutors actively encouraged us to develop our own style, which gave us the confidence and freedom to help us cultivate our own ideas.
Work hard and try to gain as much experience from collaborating with both professionals and your peers. We were lucky to have many occasions to collaborate with different design courses at the college, which opened us up to different ways of thinking and creative inspiration.
