For Fashion graduates, bridging the gap between creative schoolwork and seeing others sporting their garments can often be a long and sometimes very wobbly process. Fashion is a competitive profession, and making a name for yourself in the industry can feel like a daunting prospect, yet there is plenty of untapped talent, which deserves recognition. This is where ArtsThread, an online network for young creative steps in. ArtsThread began as a magazine highlighting the best of graduate talent, which has grown into a support system that helps launch graduate careers into the fashion industry.
It was through this platform that one of our very own Ravensbourne BA (Hons) Fashion graduates Miss Nicolette Nadimi spotted the opportunity to take a life-changing step within her fashion career. ArtsThread had teamed up with Urban Outfitters on ‘Make it’, a unique series of design competitions with the aim to launch the careers of emerging talent worldwide. The first step in this process was to reach out to fashion students spanning the globe to design a garment for ‘Urban Outfitters Winter Holiday 2013’ collection. The winners happened to be five British girls, creating stunning party outfits just in time for the festive holiday season.
One of the lucky winners was Ravensbourne alumnus Nicolette Nadimi with her winning garment named
‘Nicolette Plaid Dress’ now being sold at Urban Outfitters. Here’s what she had to say on her inspiration for the design,
“I wanted it to be quite traditional, but something that really inspires me is embellishment, so that’s why I added the lace and the layering. I imagined what I’d want to wear, and what other people may want to wear when going out to a party. I wanted something comfortable, that you could dress up or down. I quite like a ‘90s T-shirt and I wanted to mix that with ‘80s punk”.
London is most definitely the place to be, especially for a Fashion student “London is really exciting, I think it’s a place where fashion reaches out to a lot of young people. It’s a place where, if you want to, you can express yourself, and be who you want to be, so it’s really wonderful walking around and seeing everyone’s different styles. It’s a great place to be if you’re creative”, says Nicolette.
Urban Outfitters hosted a party to celebrate the launch of the winning designs held at Stollway Space in New York's garment district. The party set the spotlight on all five winners who were flown to New York by Urban Outfitters to see their designs brought to life.
