The Degree Show 2014 review What a Fabulous Week!

The Degree show 2014 has come to a close, but what a week (or slightly more!) to remember. From 12-20 June, Ravensbourne gathered together with leaders from across the creative industries to celebrate the immense talent of the class of 2014.

Run and managed entirely by the students under the leadership of a final year student in Broadcast Operations, Marc Walsh, the Degree Show was the student showcase to be at this summer. ‘The six months of preparation and the two weeks of the show have been incredible’ said Marc. ‘I’ve had the pleasure of working with the other amazing students on the management team without whom none of this would have been possible. I’ve learnt an incredible amount. There’s nothing better than real world experience and that’s exactly what The Degree Show has given to me.’

Starting with the Fashion Show on Thursday 12 June, and spanning all of the following week, the show was packed with talent. Family and friends, as well as industry leaders had the chance to see the amazing and high quality work produced by graduating students.

The best of their class….

Among the Degree Show highlights was the student awards ceremony on 16 June, during which students across a variety of courses were recognised for their talent, hard work and passion.

On the 17 June, the Degree Show audience had the chance to see Stuart McDonald’s film, The Sad Clinic, and Barley G Davies’ film, Ice Cream, which was also shown accompanied by a live orchestra, The Basement Orchestra - all overseen by Luke William Hodsdon.

Industry leaders were invited to an evening reception on 19 June were they were treated to an evening of acrobatics as well as a full viewing of all the students’ work.

Throughout the week visitors had the chance to admire and learn more about students’ work by attending private views:

  • Monday, 16 June - Editing and Post Production and Web Media
  • Tuesday, 17 June - Digital Film Production, Broadcast Technology, Broadcast Operations & Production, Music Production for Media and Sound Design

  • Thursday, 19 June - Graphic Design, Motion Graphics, Design Product and Design Interaction
  • Friday, 20 June - Animation, Architecture, Digital Photography and Interior Design Environment Architectures

A live broadcast on digital terrestrial (via Freeview) and online was available all week, with live programming taking place around the building. There was a lot of interest over Social Media, which was closely tracked on and on Twitter (@RavensbourneUK, @thedegreeshow and #tds2014), as well as numerous positive mentions in online and print media.
