Michael Alger

Ravensbourne provided me with the opportunity to radically augment my expertise and pursue a new career direction in digital media.

Mike Alger

Name: Michael Alger

Course: MA Moving Image

Year of graduation: 2015

Current employer: Google

Job role: Interaction designer

When I began the course, I was interested in the emerging technology of virtual reality. It was nice that I was allowed to work on a technology that wouldn't traditionally be part of a film and animation course. Because there were so few people working on VR interfaces at the time, I was able to establish a form of thought leadership.

Access to rapid prototyping machinery was probably the nicest benefit of studying at Ravensbourne and I was able to teach myself how to do them using the facilities. The fact that they have got developer kits of the Oculus Rift headset partway through the year was also integral in teaching myself how to prototype for VR.

Through posting videos explaining my work and direction I gained some contacts in the industry and was invited to speak at a few meetups about VR design.

This postgraduate course is more of a self-directed opportunity to teach yourself whatever software or skillset you might find interesting and is ideal for people who want to figure out how to do something visually interesting that's never been done before.
