BA (Hons) Fashion

This forward thinking course offers the innovative designer of the future an opportunity to study fashion design with a focus on the use and application of new media. The course is innovative and highly industry focused nurturing the skills vital for working as a designer/practitioner within the industry both now and in the future.

GFW 16 - Students showcased collections that featured colour blocking, over-sized outerwear, creative draping, playful androgynous separates and tailoring.

The course will facilitate the exploration of design theory, ethics, research methodologies, concept development, design, pattern cutting, illustration, colour, fabric and digital print. New digital technologies such as 3D printing, digital print, digital embroidery, laser cutting and the Lectra CAD/CAM design management system will be used in line with new and emerging industry practice. Students of this degree will be given the chance to qualify with additional Lectra certification.

Graduates will be well prepared for a wide range of opportunities within menswear, womenswear, textile design, creative cutting, product development, CAD/CAM process management, professional spec drawing, tech pack production and design management.

You will study through a mix of practice and theory-based learning. This will include lectures, seminars, workshops, individual tutorials, self directed study and projects. You will be supported by well-qualified teaching staff and visiting professionals from the fashion industry.

Entry requirements

Students will normally be expected to possess five GCSEs (grade C or above) or equivalent (including English and Mathematics) and also to hold at least one of the following or equivalent UK or international qualification:

  • 2 A levels, grade C or above
  • 4 AS levels, grade C or above
  • 2 vocational A level, grade C or above
  • Level 3 Foundation Diploma or National Diploma
  • Advanced Diploma, grade C or above
  • International Baccalaureate, 28 points or above

What the next three years will look like

You will be continually assessed through preparation of written and project work. Assessment in the final year is through dissertation and portfolio.

Year 1

You will study: introduction to fashion; mapping the fashion profession; introduction to textiles; digital design directives, and theory and context.

Year 2

You will study: creative collaboration; external brief; digital portfolio; work placement, and dissertation preparation.

Year 3

You will study: concept development & prototyping; career planning and personal promotion; major project realization, and dissertation.


Successful completion of this course can lead to postgraduate study in MA Fashion and MDes Luxury Brand Management Innovation.
