Undergraduate Learner's project

This course has been designed to give you the professional skills, knowledge and experience to use digital technologies creatively in the making of advertising and advertising campaigns.

The course will enable you to prepare an innovative, creative portfolio of advertising to progress into key roles in the advertising industry. The course specialises in advertising, marketing and promotions, with particular emphasis on designing for new media and multiple platforms. Graphic design, branding, moving image and animation skills are underpinned by an understanding of key advertising strategies and core business knowledge.

A variety of roles are open to graduates including: account handler/manager, copywriter, digital designer, creative manager/director, web designer, graphic designer, interactive designer, and design producer.

You will learn through a mixture of practice and theory-based learning; this will include lectures, seminars, workshops, individual tutorials, self-directed study and projects. You will be guided by professionally qualified and experienced teaching staff and visiting speakers from industry.

Entry requirements

For this course students should have a background in art, creative media, or design. Students will normally be expected to possess five GCSEs (grade C or above) or equivalent (including English and Mathematics) and also to hold at least one of the following or equivalent UK or international qualification:

  • 2 A levels, grade C or above
  • 4 AS levels, grade C or above
  • 2 vocational A level, grade C or above
  • Level 3 Foundation Diploma or National Diploma
  • Advanced Diploma, grade C or above
  • International Baccalaureate, 28 points or above

What the next three years will look like

You will be continually assessed through preparation of written and project work. Assessment in the final year is through dissertation and portfolio.

Year 1

You will study: concepts, the digital image; media and the web; branding; communication and visualisation; the industry of your profession; planning for enterprise, and theory and context.

Year 2

You will study: design innovation; cross media concepts; integrated branding; live projects; promotions and advertising; collaboration; entrepreneurship, and dissertation preparation.

Year 3

You will study: online advertising; competitions; major project work and report writing; self-initiated portfolio projects, and a dissertation.


Successful completion of this course can lead to postgraduate study in MA/MSc Broadcast Futures, MA Communication Design, MDes Design Management Innovation, MA/MSc Interactive Digital Media, and MDes Luxury Brand Management Innovation.
