Art direction for photographers


An exploration into how photographic imagery is constructed for a specific end result. The course is aimed at increasing your understanding of imagery and how it is used in various commercial contexts – why one image is more appropriate than another. You will explore different ways art direction is used to shape imagery through both theoretical and practical considerations.

This course is for photographers seeking to gain a greater insight into how the creative industry uses photography.

  • Learning to work within limitations
  • The creation of a publication using InDesign and Photoshop

Learning outcomes

How to think differently about image construction The importance of image selection and crop. An insight into how the creative industry works. A greater understanding of design, typography and page layout. How to art direct yourself and how to art direct others.

What you need to bring

A laptop with Photoshop and InDesign CS or CC, a notebook, pens/pencils and a camera.

About your tutor

Terry Hawes

Having graduated from Central St Martin's, Terry spent most of his professional career in editorial design working with the BBC, the Guardian & Observer, Emap and Conde Nast as Art Director. Having recently gone freelance his client base includes among others BP, RBS, EBRD, the UN and Arup. A passion for photography and typography and how they interrelate have formed the basis of a career spanning over 25 years. He recently launched his own quarterly publication entitled Simpson, about all aspects of contemporary british road cycling.
