Typography an introduction


Discover the art of typography and learn the fundamentals of arranging type to make the written language not only legible and readable, but also appealing. An Introduction to Typography will give you an overview of the principles of good typography, analysing its main components in depth and providing you with the necessary tools to handle type competently. This fun course will couple theoretical learning with practical activities to build your confidence in developing your own typographical style.  

Topics covered

  • History of type reproduction
  • The Letterform: Terminology 3
  • The typeface: Terminology and categorisation
  • The Page: Terminology, basic elements and their functions,  grid and layout, hierarchy, legibility and readability, designing for Print vs. Designing for screen
  • An introduction to key typographers
  • Learning new software including Indesign Font management tools and experimenting in Fontlab

Learning outcomes

On completion of this course you will have gained an understanding of the core elements of typography and their interaction. You will develop the ability to use design systems (grids) to create typographic layout. You will be able to evaluate and employ typographic techniques/conventions for multiple contexts, as well as identify typographical technical and quality problems.
